Understanding BLS

Why it matters

In a hospital, clinic, or dental office, a cardiac or respiratory emergency is a team event, not a one-person job. The AHA's Basic Life Support course is built around that reality. It trains clinical staff to work together, communicate clearly, and move through a resuscitation efficiently, whether that's in a waiting room or during an in-facility code.

What to expect

BLS Provider covers single-rescuer and team-based CPR for adults, children, and infants, effective use of a bag-valve mask, and coordinated AED use, along with the clinical differences between responding in a facility versus a public setting. The course includes hands-on skills practice, a skills check, and a completion card valid for two years, the credential most healthcare employers and licensing boards ask for.
